Part One

As a love triangle develops between Daniel, Francesca and Maisy, Stephen realises there is unfinished business between the two women from a previous life. Daniel discovers that Francesca has a mysterious sleep condition — she needs to sleep for a week or more after not sleeping at all for several weeks.

Eventually Francesca falls into a deep sleep and cannot be woken. Stephen, Daniel and Amy journey to the Other World to find her. In the Lower World, helped by animal spirits, they find Francesca's five-year-old Spirit with Miranda's Spirit in a cave, being looked after by a large brown female bear. It transpires that during her long sleeps she has been visiting the Spirit of her twin Miranda since she died at the age of five.

Journeying to the Upper World they find Francesca's adult Spirit. She says she cannot return to Earth as Maisy will try to kill her. She explains that her previous Spirit John was responsible for Mary's death and that as Maisy shares a spirit with Mary, she is seeking revenge.

Stephen persuades Francesca to continue her life — but with fatal consequences.

Part Two

Francesca and Daniel are now married. Francesca wishes to lead a normal life, but Daniel is determined to try to help Stephen — whose spirit has been captured for eternity by Henry, an evil spirit.

In Mexico City, experiencing visions of another previous life they have both lived, they realise they are entwined in a deadly spirit cycle with Stephen and Maisy, which has been going on for centuries.

Daniel embarks on a mission to rescue Stephen's Spirit and following a fierce battle in the Middle World in which he is helped by Francesca, his Spirit is finally released from the Void.

But Daniel realises too late the danger Francesca is still in. He cannot prevent her from being killed by Maisy when their son Orlando is only a few months old. Maisy dies in childbirth, leaving Daniel to raise both children — Orlando and their daughter Dorian — alone.

Part Three

Part One: Orlando and Dorian are celebrating their joint twelfth birthday when Daniel arrives home in a state of physical and mental exhaustion. After years of searching, he still hasn't found the source of the spirit cycle.

Reacting to a programme about the Lascaux caves in France, he travels there with his best friend Guy. While in the caves, Daniel experiences a vision through the eyes of a young shaman named Kaylin, who lived twenty thousand years ago. He discovers how the spirit cycle was inadvertently caused — and receives the call 'DRUM EARTH' to help save the planet from future ecological disaster.

Part Two: Now adults, Orlando and Dorian show Daniel a possible way to succeed — developing special fast-growing trees with huge leaves, which could help enormously to reduce global heating. Their company ORLANDOR uses money from the trust fund to make this vision real.

Part Three: The Company achieves a successful launch. But Daniel must now end the spirit cycle before he dies. First he and his companions must battle evil spirits in the Middle World in a ferocious war — a war that must be won at all costs.

The Epilogue — 2070 — finds Daniel, now sixty-four, at a garden party surrounded by family and friends, watching drone footage of millions of special trees planted across logged rainforests and forests the world over. The spirit cycle is broken. The planet breathes.
